The Sparrow

2006

The sparrow stared as I sat silently,
Upon the seat setting in the shade
My soul was soaked with sorrow,
For a sorry state I was in

Smiles ceased to soothe me,
Though some sought to seduce a smirk from me,
Salutations would send me self-conscious,
So I sat as if senile

But soon a sensation slid down my spine,
And I swiveled to see who saw me
With a serious swirl I swung around,
Only to see a small sparrow staring at me

I stared back, surprised at the small sparrow’s lack of shame
He sensed no shock, somehow,
He showed none, either,
It didn’t seem to show, at least

Slowly his simple stare slid into a shrewd gaze,
And I supposed he knew,
About what I hid all these days
But that was simply silly

Yet his stare scared me some,
And I pondered why,
This small sparrow would dare to look
A sullen being in the eye

So as he stared the same I sat suspicious,
Speculating on what he knew,
Slowly seeing
That this small sparrow saw into my soul

I smirked at the small sparrow,
Supposing I should ask of his secret
Of how he saw
Into my stabbing secret

He surely sensed that the someone I found
To complete my self,
Knew nothing
Of my existence

He surely sensed that my life
Had become superfluous,
For a significant segment of my self
Was with this certain someone

He surely sensed that my good sense
Had insensibly sought sanctuary somewhere else,
And had stolen away with my sanity,
And so I sat silently upon the seat setting in the shade

I surely sensed
That this small sparrow was sage
For he saw into my soul,
Into the secret section of my heart

But I never saw,
I simply did not see,
Why this small sage sparrow
Shouldn’t save me

If this silent sparrow could separate mind from spirit,
If this small sparrow could search my senses,
If this sage sparrow could see my soul,
He surely could see a solution to my situation

So I slid closer to the small sage sparrow,
Seeking to soak up some of his supposings,
But this small, sage, silent sparrow
Remained silent

After several seconds I began
To seethe with suspicion,
As this sage of sorts would not say something,
But still stood, staring steadily

But my suspicion subsided
When I suddenly saw,
That this small sparrow was silently showing me the solution
The whole time

Though I saluted then slapped him,
Though I smiled then seethed at him,
Though I serenaded then scorned him,
He stayed straight

He was not swayed by my mood swings,
He didn’t stir as I sang his praises,
And I saw at long last,
What that sage sparrow was saying

And as he flew somewhere away
Into the endless sky,
I shouted my thanks to the silent sage,
The small sparrow

For he taught me that as long as you stay true to yourself,
And remain you,
Nothing will shake you, and you will reach great heights,
And you can get what you truly want from life

So I set off to the south,
Goal secure in mind,
And I went to retrieve the other half of me,
Who still had a substantial segment of my soul

All thanks to that small, silent, sage skybird I call
Sparrow.
