Poem #10

2006

Our Heavenly Father, Jehovah God,
The Hearer of Prayer,
We approach you now to empty our hearts,
We know for us you’re there

You give us more than we ask for,
And we’re truly unworthy
There are peoples, nations, millions of your servants,
That are much worse off than we

But we well know that we are not strong
A little farther from perfection than the rest
And we’ve been stumbling around so long
Now we want to do more than our best

The best we can do is learn about you,
Without coming to love you
The best we can do is know your law,
Without staying true

The best we can see is our lives today,
But not that the future will be better
The best we can be are husbands and wives today,
Without any thought of forever

The best we can say is “Horray,” to ourselves,
“I survived another day without pay,” to ourselves,
“Who cares if there is no food in the shelves,
“Jehovah said ‘come what may’,” to ourselves

Heavenly Father Jehovah, our best is low
We should do better, considering all we know
We know about you, we know what is true
We know what is right and what is wrong to do

What we don’t know is how to please you,
Despite all our sins, how to appease you,
To see you as your son Christ sees you,
We just don’t know

We don’t know how to do your will,
We don’t know how to trust you’ll fulfill
Your promises, and so we fear,
We just don’t know

We don’t know how to share our life
We’re willing to turn love into years of strife
Later regrets can cut like a knife
We just don’t know

You deserve much more than our best,
So this is proving to be our true test,
To not give up, but let you the way show
Because honestly Jehovah, we don’t know

We now bow our head, wait, and obey,
There is nothing else for us to say,
Except we love you, Father, and through your son we pray,
Amen
